Famed Breaking Bad villain Giancarlo Esposito has boarded Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix original series The Get Down in a more virtuous role.
The 13-episode series focuses on a group of teenagers in the South Bronx in the ’70s and explores how the near bankrupt city became the birthplace of hip-hop, punk and disco.EW has confirmed Esposito will play Pastor Ramon Cruz, the charismatic leader of a local Pentecostal church. The pastor attracts his congregation through impassioned sermons and his steady leadership. He is often at odds with his daughter, Mylene Cruz (Herizen Guardiola), who dreams of being a disco star. His brother is Francisco Cruz a.k.a “Papa Fuerte” (Jimmy Smits).
“Continuing the high quality of our acting company in The Get Down, we’re very pleased to announce that Giancarlo Esposito will be joining us in the role of Pastor Ramon Cruz. Giancarlo has played such a variety of roles and he’s a tremendous asset to our production,” Luhrmann said in a statement.Esposito will be joining an already impressive cast that includes Jaden Smith, Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, Skylan Brooks, Tremaine Brown Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen, and Mamoudou Athie. Rapper Grandmaster Flash will serve as an associate producer and adviser to the series.
The Get Down is expected to premiere in 2016.
