Teen Wolf may be first and foremost the story of Scott McCall, but it is Lydia Martin who has arguably undergone the greatest transformation on the show. From the stereotypical mean girl to a somewhat reluctant member of the pack to a fully-fledged supernatural, our Banshee queen has had a truly incredible journey.
Though Season 5B saw her fighting for her life in Eichen House, Lydia emerged stronger than ever and played a crucial role in taking down the Beast/saving Mason. Now that she has rejoined her friends, what can we expect to see from our HBIC (Head Banshee in Charge) as we go into Season 6? “Lydia is the most mature she’s ever been this season. I think she’s dealing with civilian adulthood matters in that sense,” Holland Roden said. “In breaking out of Eichen House, you got to see a more physical side of Lydia, and this season she puts back on her heels and is in more of the psychological and intellectual conversations in trying to solve Beacon Hills’ problems.”
Not only is Lydia more mature than ever, but her powers are, too. In surviving and escaping Eichen House, she gained some amazing new abilities. Thus far, we’ve mostly seen Lydia’s fighting skills in action only under extreme circumstances. According to Holland, we’ll see a different side of her character’s abilities now that she is readjusting to pack life. “Her powers play in indirectly, into reaching out to other time periods and seeing how those Banshees connect to her,” she said. “Learning from others is how she is able to contribute this season – that’s the biggest aid Lydia is able to lend.”
It seems that we will not only see Lydia connecting with other Banshees, but possibly tapping into other time periods. “There’s [an episode] coming up, and it deals with time travel… or a different period, I should say,” she said. Though Holland couldn’t reveal too much on the prospect of Teen Wolf time travel, that’s something we’d definitely be interested to see. “It’s a great episode that deals with more of the Irish folklore as a whole, and it potentially connects to bringing one of the villains down,” Holland added.
Speaking of villains, the pack will have plenty of evil to contend with this season with both the Nazi werewolf and the Ghost Riders on the loose. With the Ghost Riders being a major topic of conversation at SDCC, we asked Holland how Lydia will be interacting with them this season. “I wouldn’t say she has a front row seat to them, but she’s definitely analyzing them the most – and there’s a reason why she’s able to analyze them the most,” she said.
Of course, the question of Stydia is also a pressing one as we enter what we now know will be Teen Wolf‘s final season. Jeff Davis has teased a “definitive” Stydia moment for the season premiere – and though Holland couldn’t talk too much about that, she did offer some words on the subject. “There’s something definitely added to the pile in comparison to their past interactions,” she said, teasing “a new angle” to Stiles and Lydia’s relationship. As vague as that is, Holland seems to be supportive of Stydia shippers. “I’m hoping that they get their wish, and I think they will be satisfied,” she said.
Watch our interview with Holland Roden below, in which she teases a “psychological” Season 6 and talks about her favorite Lydia moments.
