Benedict Cumberbatch: being a father has made me a better Hamlet

The British actor says he now understands the complexity of the father/son relationship after having a newborn baby son

For most first-time fathers, a newborn baby son means endless sleepless nights, a rollercoaster of emotions and an introduction to the tricky world of nappy changes.

For a world famous actor, however, it comes with one more unexpected bonus: making him a better Hamlet.

Benedict Cumberbatch, the British actor, has disclosed how becoming a father helped inform his star turn at the Barbican, after giving him a deeper insight into families.

Cumberbatch, who married Sophie Hunter in February and welcomed their baby son in June, said fatherhood had make him consider how he had been brought up and the role of parenthood.

It had also, he said, given him less time to agonise over critiquing his own performance each night, because he had a newborn to rush home to.

Cumberbatch, who has been credited with introducing a new generation of fans to the Shakespeare play, will next week speak in depth about his time as Hamlet for the first time in a new interview with Lord Bragg.

As well as discussing his inspiration and interpretation of Shakespeare’s words, the actor will share his personal approach to the part, including eating “an awful lot”.

The interview, seen by the Telegraph, will be broadcast in full in a new Sky Arts series of a Lord Bragg’s South Bank Show.
Filmed midway through his run as Hamlet, Cumberbatch said he had been inspired to take on the role by “age, life experience and the opportunity to being a new audience to a 400-year-old piece of brilliance”.
“I’ve just become a father and I used to think of have to be childless to be a Hamlet,” he told Lord Bragg.
“I thought that it may be a difficult ingredient to play with but it’s miraculous - as I’m sure you know being a dad - that your thinking about how you were parented shoots up as well.
“So that’s all fed into it.
“It’s serendipity though, that wasn’t as planned as this was.”
When asked how he approached the final scene, he said he could describe the death scene only as a “out breath” of relief before he “immediately starts the self-critiquing”.
But, he said: “I have to shed my skin quite quickly.
"I drop it all very very quickly because I have to eat and sleep. That’s honestly the truth. And get home, to a newborn.”
He added the play left him “tired and hungry”, confessing he was eating an “awful lot” to keep up with the sheer physical energy it required.
Cumberbatch’s first son was announced to the world on June 1, with the actor releasing an intimate photograph of him cradling the newborn.
He and Hunter have not officially confirmed his name, though it is widely reported to be Christopher Carlton Cumberbatch.

Hunter, a director, was photographed at the opening night of Hamlet along with Cumberbatch’s proud parents.

The play, awarded four stars by the Telegraph, became the fastest-selling on the history of theatre after Cumberbatch’s name was announced, with fans of the stars film and television work keen to see his work in the flesh.

“It’s really thrilling to think it might be getting to a new audience, is getting to a new audience,” said the actor,

“That’s a terrific thing and that does stay with me.”

When asked whether he had felt a “biological clock” ticking to play Hamlet, who is traditional a younger man, Cumberbatch told the programme: “Very possibly. Having now done it, very possibly.

"I didn’t start out with a bucket list if great roles I wanted to play, but of course it’s something I found a lot of other people were coming up to me and asking.

"It was more a constant voice outside of my head saying ‘you should give this a go’.

"But having done it I completely understand why a year and a half ago when I said I was going to do it, people said ‘oh, good luck’.
"It’s huge, it’s just huge.”
The full programme will show extensive clips of the play, as well as seeing Cumberbatch visit an East London school to view their own performance of Hamlet.
It is due to be broadcast on the South Bank Show on Sky Arts on Wednesday, at 9pm.

Salve Cumberladies! 
Anche se 'desaparecida' e con sentimenti ormai tiepidi per Benedict (anche quelli piu' appassionati possono affievolirsi  ), vengo ogni tanto a leggervi e ho notato con grande piacere che il mio amore per il bozzetto  continua a fare degni proseliti...bene! 
Il prossimo fine settimana sarò a Londra per vedere, tra l'altro, Hamlet (il 16) : speriamo che stavolta la maledizione di Tuthanelinor    sia scongiurata e io possa FINALMENTE godermi dal vivo il Cumberlord in carne, ossa, cartilagini varie e nei sparsi... Da queĺlo che ho capito inoltre, la decisione  iniziale di non fare la stage door e' spesso non mantenuta : lo spero proprio!
Ho sentito pareri discordanti comunque su questa versione di Hamlet e quindi sono molto curiosa di vederla. Certo che tra Ben e Jonas Kaufmann i miei simpatici ormoni il prossimo we faranno la ola...
Intanto un caloroso in bocca al lupo alle due Mod, specie alla cara April!
