Terriers from Creator/Executive Producer Ted Griffin (Ocean’s Eleven, Matchstick Men) and Executive Producer Shawn Ryan (The Shield), is a comedic drama starring Donal Logue (The Tao of Steve) and Michael Raymond-James (True Blood). It centers on “Hank Dolworth” (Logue), an ex-cop, who partners with his best friend “Britt Pollack” (Raymond-James) in an unlicensed private investigation business.

Comedic, edgy, original, a show about high stakes in the face of low expectations, Terriers explores what it’s like in today's America to be “too small to fail.” Co-stars include Laura Allen (Dirt) as “Katie,” Britt’s girlfriend; Rockmond Dunbar (Prison Break) as “Detective Mark Gustafson,” former colleague of Hank; and Jamie Denbo (Weeds) as “Maggie Lefferts,” Hank’s attorney. Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flow, The Shield) directed the pilot episode. Terriers is produced by Fox 21.

Advance Review: It's a shame that, for the most part, TV pilots usually represent the very least a series can offer; no matter the series. Sure, there have been occasional exceptions over the years, but most pilots, by nature, are weighed down with rushed introductions, bloated exposition and a general feeling of "once we get past this beginning part we can get into the good stuff." I've infused myself with low-expectations. But then a show like FX's Terriers  comes along and presents a standard, time-honored TV genre in a gritty and fresh manner and the televisual world is made whole again.

From The Shield's creator, Shawn Ryan, and Ocean's Eleven writer Ted Griffin, comes a series that, by all accounts, seems like it should play out as a standard "blue sky" buddy crime-buster series. But Terriers brings so much more to the table. It's saddled with maturity, wit and a scruffy heart that helps make its disheveled characters pop right off the screen. Donal Logue and Michael Raymond-James' odd-job, non-licensed Ocean Beach private dicks feel both tangible and poetic. They feel both archarchetypal and amazingly atypical.

Logue portrays ex-cop, ex-drinker Hank Dolworth as a strong, smart man who's not to be pitied for the mistakes he's made in life. Logue gives this man a hidden, inner joy that shines through occasionally and vanquishes the quicksand darkness that usually befalls a working-class PI character like this. In this first episode, Raymond-James' Brit Pollack doesn't exactly sing out as being much more than Hank's slightly less ambitious friend who saunters around with baby anxiety, but having seen more episodes beyond the pilot, I can tell you that he, and his girlfriend Katie (The 4400's Laura Allen), also becomes quite memorable and beautifully "TV real."

Raymond-James and Logue ponder how little their True Blood and Blade characters would get along
I won't get into the specific "ins and outs" of the story in this first episode, but it proved to be a wonderfully intense way to enter into the series as Hank and Brit get their drifter-selves unintentionally entangled in the nefarious affairs of a prominent "upstanding citizen" of San Diego, Robert Lindus - played by Breaking Bad's Christopher Cousins. They're low-tide Sam Spades who get caught up in the high-water blackmail dealings of the So Cal uppercrust and one of the great things about this pair is that, most often, they do the absolute minimal and only look out for their own interests. In fact, the "spine" of the series very well might involve the two of them finding their spines and thwarting grand scale criminal wrong-doings in the name of justice - and not just in the name of pocket cash.

Kimberly Quinn and Rockmond Dunbar are also on board as Hank's ex-wife and ex-partner and, as with most everything on this series, characters that could easily be paint-by-numbers are fleshed out beautifully through crisp dialogue and earnest, subdued performances. Look, Terriers isn't here to change the landscape of cable TV, but it is an unexpectedly winning and captivating show that elevates a somewhat tired genre. Think of Charles Bukowski after an effective 12-step program, or Jack Kerouac if he never left his home town; unkempt, unapologetic and irresistible.

più che altro serve che piaccia a qualche revisore..o senior..chissà chissà di serie ne uscirà un botto tra settembre e ottobre e non penso sia umanamente possibile che le faccian tutte..

La serie sarà sicuramente bella, ci ha messo pure la mano anche Shawn Ryan 
Poi è anche su FX che sforna quasi sempre buonissime serie tv.

Terriers Series Premiere Review: Off to a Great Start


Terriers is a show that relies on the chemistry of its two leads.

Fortunately, FX has cast real-life friends Donal Logue and Michael Raymond-James (as Hank Dolworth and Britt Pollack, respectively) as a pair of unlicensed private investigators who play off each other perfectly. The pilot episode begins and ends with a simple conversation between the two, which is a solid summation of a great series premiere:

It doesn't try too hard. Terriers succeeds due to quick-witted dialogue and a basic premise. It doesn't rely on special effects or complicated storytelling, just quality writing and characters I feel like I know well after just one hour of watching them work.


The show is produced by Ted Griffin (Ocean's 11) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield), and each man leaves the mark of the movie/show for which he's best known.

Hank and Britt operate a lot like George Clooney and Brad Pitt's characters from that film franchise. They're clearly tight, jokingly argue about mundane topics, but get down to business when it's time to break into a property or investigate a scene.

Hank mirrors Danny Ocean not only as the leader of the duo, but with the ex-wife he wants to win back. When it comes to Britt's love life, the show steers away from convention by giving him a serious girlfriend who doesn't encourage her man to find a more lucrative, legal career.

We don't get a lot about Katie and Britt's relationship - aside from the cliche that she wants a baby and he isn't ready yet - on this episode, but she seems turned on by the unusual life Britt leads. You also gotta love a guy who turns the favor a dry cleaning store owes him into a free meal at a nice restaurant.

As for Ryan's influence, one of the key components of The Shield was Vic Mackey's ability to weasel out of dangerous situations by thinking six steps ahead and playing various individuals or groups against each other. Hank seems to have this potential.

The premiere didn't suffer from the clunky dialogue that plagues so many other pilots, as many shows awkwardly throw a lot of information at viewers in order to educate them about their characters. Instead, Terriers just lets us see a a day in the life of these men, specifically Hank, and I turned off the TV confident that I knew the former detective pretty well.

He's a recovering alcoholic and he's been content solving petty crimes outside the force... until events from this episode light Hank's crime-fighting fire once again. He and Britt may spend most of the hour trading sarcastic barbs, but in his speech to Robert Lindus, it's clear Hank has it in him to be a serious, vengeful fellow.

I've also been a fan of Rockmond Dunbar since his role on Prison Break. Nice to see him on the opposite side of the law here.

Overall, a well-written, sharp pilot that has me excited for the rest of the season.
