Question: I know it’s probably too soon for New Girl scoop, but I’m asking anyway. —Jessica
Ausiello: Actually, Jessica, you’re right about on schedule, because when we spoke with Max Greenfield at Monday’s Critics’ Choice Television Awards, he wasn’t just talking about the new season, he was talking spinoff. (Jokingly, mind you.) “Schmidt and Cece are either going to break up or they’re going to take their relationship to the next level, by [which] I mean children,” he teased. But “with the kids and the apartment, there wouldn’t be room for any of us on the show anymore, so we’d move to CBS and be a family sitcom. That’s all I want to do — a multi-cam family show.” Kidding aside, all the actor really knew was that there was a high likelihood that he’d be stripped down again in Season 2. “That, I could do without,” he sighed, “although it’s a challenge, and I’ve got some time [to get in shape. But I’ll probably just] wait ’til the last minute again, and it’s going to be that last week [before we shoot] and I’ll be, ‘Why did I wait so long? I had months [to get ripped]!’”

First and foremost: Zooey Deschanel’s new love interest on the show is going to be played by David Walton. The actor most recently starred in NBC’s comedy Bent. Now he’s landed a recurring role in season two of New Girl when Jess falls for a “classic bad boy type.” His character mistakes Jess for someone else, but she decides to go along with it anyway. Expect him to show up in New Girl’s premiere on Sept. 25.
Second bit o’ news: Actress Leslie Mann (Knocked Up) will guest star in the second season premiere. She’ll play a “shot girl” whom Schmidt (Max Greenfield) hires to work his party celebrating the removal of his penis cast. (Finally got to use the term “penis cast” in a sentence.)
And last but not least: Rachael Harris (The Hangover) is returning to the show. Harris played the vice-principal of Jess’s school in the first season and has now booked an appearance in season two as well.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that an early episode in the sophomore run features Jess getting her purse swiped, with the assailant being played by Niecy Nash.

And Nash won't be taking on just any run of the mill purse-snatcher, the Reno 911! star and former Dancing With the Stars competitor will also be playing a lady of the night.

NATALIE: As we teased earlier, Jess loses her job in the premiere and will be forced to take on "jobs that are really regrettable that she wishes she didn't have," executive producer Liz Meriweather tells us. Her first odd job has to do with Schmidt's party to celebrate the removal of his penis cast! "Schmidt is relaunching himself into the world and he amazingly doesn't have enough shot girls, so Jess has to try to be a shot girl for a night. Weirdly, it does not go well," she adds.

Josh Gad is crushing on a New Girl.

Broadway’s Book of Mormon alum has booked a gig in the quirky Fox comedy’s second season premiere, E! Online reports.

Gad — who also co-stars in NBC’s midseason comedy 1600 Penn — will play a beer-delivery guy named Bearclaw (!) who tries to woo Zooey Deschanel’s leading lady Jess.

Here’s a bit of casting news to make you say Amen: Anna Maria Horsford is joining New Girl as Winston’s tough-talking mom.
The TV vet will guest-star in the Fox comedy’s upcoming Season 2, TVLine has learned exclusively. Her character, Charmaine Bishop, is a Chicagoan who raised all of her children to become professional basketball players — in Winston’s case, at least, it worked for a while! Oh, and Mama Bishop hates Schmidt. (As if such a thing were possible!)

Looks like New Girl faves Schmidt and Cece won’t be reconciling anytime soon.
Traffic Light alum Nelson Franklin has been cast in the quirky Fox comedy’s second season (bowing Sept. 25) as the model’s new boyfriend, TVGuide.com reports.
The funnyman’s character, Robby, is described as a nice guy — albeit a half-deaf one — who is a shockingly bad dancer.

Fox’s New Girl has tapped Parker Posey to guest star in the show’s Season 2 premiere on Sept. 25, TVLine has learned exclusively.
The indie goddess, who garnered raves for her recent arc as Louis C.K.’s unhinged love interest on FX’s Louie, will play a “shot girl” at a party to celebrate the removal of Schmidt’s penis cast.
Leslie Mann was originally cast in the role, but the Knocked Up actress had to back out due to a scheduling conflict.

New Girl’s Nick has seen the future, and it ain’t pretty.
In the Fox comedy’s upcoming Season 2, Justified’s Raymond Barry will guest-star as Older Nick, a very old, very drunk man who hangs out at Nick’s bar and claims to be Nick — from the future.

Nick (played by Jake Johnson) can’t possibly fall for the sot’s time-traveling claims, can he? Maybe it’ll make a difference when the older man – who bears a striking resemblance to the law-school dropout — knows everything that’s going to happen to him in the coming years. (And after Nick’s Season 1 finale freak-out about moving in with Caroline, just the latest event in his sad-sack love life, we’d bet you a beer that his version of events isn’t rosy.) Perhaps the strange encounter will be just the thing to get Nick moving in Jess’ direction…

The show’s looking for tall, lovely ladies with basketball experience, because Alisha plays for the Los Angeles Sparks WNBA team. Though Winston’s sis wants nothing to do with Schmidt’s advances, she does accept his challenge of a one-on-one game… and it turns out just about how you’d think it would. Elsewhere in the apartment, Jess drunkenly makes dates with three different guys (and under two different names).

Keenyah Hill will guest-star on New Girl as Alisha, the sister of Winston (Lamorne Morris), TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

Alisha, a professional basketball player, pays her brother a visit when her team comes to town. She is not happy at all when Schmidt (Max Greenfield) is dazzled by her beauty and becomes determined to pursue her romantically. When Schmidt stupidly challenges her to a one-on-one game of basketball, she annihilates him.
